The Philippines leads the world in terms of time spent online and social media usage, according to a new global study into digital trends across 230 countries and territories.

People in the Southeast Asian country now spend 10 hours and 2 minutes online each day compared with a worldwide average of 6 hours and 42 minutes, Rappler reported.

Thailand and Indonesia are two other Asian nations that join the Philippines in the global top five, clocking up 9 hours and 11 minutes per day and 8 hours and 36 minutes respectively.

Brazil ranks second with 9 hours and 29 minutes spent online each day, while Colombia is placed fourth where people spend 9 hours a day on the internet.

These are just some of the findings from the comprehensive Digital 2019 report, which was released last week by Hootsuite, the social media management platform, and creative agency We Are Social.

Now in its eighth year, the report confirmed that emerging markets in Southeast Asia and Latin America dominate its internet usage index, although it is notable that Japanese consumers spend the least amount of time online, averaging just 3 hours and 45 minutes per day.

According to Hootsuite and We Are Social, the total number of internet users around the world increased to 4.39 billion since January 2018, representing growth of 9% and equating to one million new people going online every day.

In addition, there are now 3.48 billion users of social media – another year-on-year increase of 9% – despite well-publicised concerns about data privacy, fake news and other issues in 2018.

The Philippines also tops the global list for daily time spent on social media and it is reported that Filipinos clock in at 4 hours and 12 minutes compared to the worldwide average of 2 hours and 16 minutes.

Furthermore, the country has near total social media penetration of 99% – along with Malaysia, Taiwan and the United Arab Emirates – compared to the average global penetration rate of 58%.
