Cinemas across China could open under new guidelines as one of the hardest-hit sectors of the media returns to business after six months – the success of any initiative will likely inform re-opening efforts around the world.

Guidelines issued by the China Film Administration, and published here by the business publication, Caixin, set out the precautions for cinemas that were able to open from yesterday.

The first port of call will be to report with local government and party organisations as well as health authorities, with final plans submitted to the China Film Administration.

Inside the cinema, the new rules stipulate a maximum 30% capacity, with distances of at least one metre between people of different households while only selling every other seat.

Only cinemas in low-risk areas (most of China) will be allowed to welcome viewers, though any medium-risk areas will remain closed. At present there are no high-risk areas reported.

Coronavirus has been extremely tough on cinemas, with Caixin reporting an 88% drop in box office revenues (let alone advertising), which have meant heavy casualties: just over 6,800 cinema companies in China have shut for good.
