Alan Smith started his career with advertising agencies, moved into publishing with International Thomson and IPC, lived and worked in the United States as marketing director of M-G Inc. He joined the main board of Morgan-Grampian plc in 1980. He is a member of the ABC Council and the PPA's British Business Press Committee.
