Xinshu Zhao (Ph.D., Wisconsin-Madison; MA., Stanford; BA., Fudan University in Shanghai, China) is associate professor and associate director, center for Research, School of Journalism and Mass Communication, at the University of North Carolina at chapel Hill. He was a visiting professor of journalism and mass communication at the University of Minnesota during 1996-1998, when part of this research was conducted. Previously, he was an assistant professor of communications at Pennsylvania State University from 1989-1990. In addition to a 1997 article in the JAR, Dr. Zhao’s research has also appeared in such journals as Asian Survey, Communication Research, Comparative Education Review, Harvard International Journal of Press/Politics, the International Journal of Advertising, and others.
