For years, a strong economy shielded advertisers from efforts to tax advertising. Those days are unfortunately over.

As a result of the serious budget shortfalls facing most state governments, the advertising community faces significant new challenges in many state capitols. In the first six months of this year, acrosstheboard taxes on advertising were proposed or discussed in 12 states. Productspecific restrictions were introduced in three additional states. In total, this comprises an unprecedented number of advertising tax initiatives.
