Mobile 5G connections and devices will record the quickest growth but 4G remains the clear leader, according to the latest data from Cisco. 5G connections and devices are forecast to record a compound annual growth rate of 918.0% between 2019 and 2022, far higher than overall growth of 7.6%. This is not surprising given the strong competition surrounding the technology.
4G is also expected to register consistent growth, helping it to top over one-half of all connections and devices by 2020. This is at the expense of 2G and 3G, which see its share drop 12.2 percentage points (pp) and 8.8pp over this period. Despite 5G's rapid growth, it is forecast to account for only 3.4% of all devices and connections in 2022. Its effect will be far-reaching, however, helping to triple mobile speeds by 2022.
While 5G's share of all connections may be small, it is expected to cover 42% of the global population by 2024. Linking the technology with emotional data and artificial intelligence looks set to provide invaluable consumer insights, but concerns over cost remain.
