Video streaming market fragments as Netflix loses share

An overview of global video streaming downstream traffic by platform between 2018 and 2019.

Video streaming is becoming increasingly fragmented, according to the latest data from Sandvine. Web-based streaming apps now account for the majority of video streaming downstream traffic (23.8%). This category includes smaller and regional platforms like AMC in the US, Canal+ in France and Foxtel in Australia as well as video advertising and video-sharing sites.

Netflix, in contrast, has fallen from first to second. It accounts for 23.1% of the total, down from over one-quarter (26.6%) in 2018. It remains the most popular single video streaming platform in traffic, though.
