Shopify sales volume doubles to overtake eBay

An overview of Shopify's Gross Merchandise Volume and revenue during the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

A global rise in online shopping meant that the value of orders processed using the Shopify platform more than doubled in the second quarter of 2020, according to company reports.

The platform's Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV), the value of orders facilitated through Shopify, reached $30.1bn in Q2 2020. This 118.6% growth is the fastest rate ever recorded and $30.1bn is the first time Shopify's GMV has overtaken eBay's, which reached $27.1bn in Q2 2020.

The company says that the food, beverages and tobacco categories saw their GMV grow even faster than this.
