Consumers uncertain about paying for online news

An overview of consumers paying for online editorial content in six European markets and the United States between 2017 and 2019.

Consumers are uncertain about paying for online editorial content like news, features and e-magazines, according to a survey of internet users by AudienceProject in Q4 2019. Across the six markets surveyed in 2017 and 2019, half reported an increase in the share of people paying for online content – while half saw no change or a decline.

Paying for online content is most common in Norway, where over one-third (37.6%) report doing so. This is an increase from an already strong one-quarter (26.9%) in 2017. Sweden and Finland also saw growth to around one-fifth, at 20.2% and 18.2%...
