Rocked to its core, the fitness industry was one of the top sectors to feel the impact of South Africa's strict and prolonged national lockdown in 2020, during which fitness centres and gyms were legally obligated to remain closed for almost six months. Virgin Active, South Africa's leading gym and fitness provider, was forced to temporarily close its 133 clubs across the country on 26 March 2020, which impacted over 700 000 members.
