For the longest time, rural India has used coal and wood as cooking fuel. The traditional 'Chula' - an earthen fire stove used in rural households is fuelled by wood, cow dung or crop waste which generates thick smoke during the cooking process. The smoke is not only an irritant but also leads to respiratory ailments and lung infections amongst rural women.
