The Japanese attack on the U.S. fleet at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, roused the American public into war fever. In San Francisco people crowded into the streets, throwing rocks at street lamps to black out the shore against a feared invasion. Teenage boys patrolled the beaches with BB guns, hoping to defend their homes against attacking Japanese soldiers. But as months passed, it became clear that the war would not reach the continental United States and, by the middle of 1942, the U.S. government began...
