Overview

The 1960s was a time of enormous growth in the environmental movement in the United States. Rachel Carson's 1962 book Silent Spring, an attack on the effects of pollution and pesticides on wildlife, was a landmark in raising public concern about what was happening to the environment. Her work helped pushed the word "ecology" into the public domain. Just nine years later, the first Earth Day was celebrated in which more than 2,000 U.S. communities.
