In 1994 Turner Classic Movies (TCM) was a small startup cable network with a collection of 4,000 movies, 21 employees, an operating budget of between $13 and $15 million, and 1 million subscribers. TCM also had the backing of television giant Turner Broadcasting System (TBS). Within a year of its launch TCM had increased its subscriptions to include 4.3 million homes, and its classic movie library had grown to 5,600 films.
