INTRODUCTION

In 1995 Nationwide launched the first Internet banking service in the United Kingdom. They were quickly followed by the high street banks in offering banking services online and joined by online banking specialists such as Egg and Cahoot.

This paper charts the progress of Internet banking from those early days through to the present. The paper will use research to show how, despite marked improvements in online banking services over the years, considerable barriers still exist, preventing many with Internet access from banking online.
