We are seeing a fundamental change in the way that people use the internet; the internet is becoming more ‘real time’. In many cases people need to know what is happening now, rather than what happened yesterday, or even a few hours ago.

There are two great recent examples of this – the live stream of Facebook comments from Barack Obama’s inauguration, and the maps created on Twitter reports of the recent snow falls in the UK.
