From the early years of the twentieth century until the federal Highway Beautification Act outlawed them in the 1960s, America's two-lane highways were dotted with a variety of novel advertising signs. There were the Burma-Shave's witty rhymes promoting shaving cream, ads luring tourists to Rock City, and barns emblazoned with the words "CHEW MAIL POUCH TOBACCO," followed by "TREAT YOURSELF TO THE BEST."
