The Save the Children Federation is the oldest and most visible private child sponsorship agency in the United States. Created in 1932 to respond to the needs of the children of coal miners in Appalachia, the Save the Children Federation worked to support community development around the world by pooling individual donations. Child sponsorship traditionally had been one of the largest sources of international private philanthropic revenue for this purpose.
