The Idea Inspiration

"Part of what civility requires is that we recall the simple lesson most of us learned from our parents: Treat others as you would like to be treated, with courtesy and respect."

– President Barack Obama, University of Michigan Commencement, May 1,2010

Reporting on The State of Civility in America Since 2010

When former President Obama said he wanted to make the topic of civility interesting to the American public in 2010, Weber Shandwick and Powell Tate took on his challenge to improve discourse in our public squares and find common ground, a worthy goal. In partnership with KRC Research, we developed the longest standing annual survey on Civility in America: A Nationwide Survey as a service to our nation and our industry. Each year, we find Americans - reliably more than 90% of them - reporting a severe civility deficit in our nation, and most classifying it as a major problem. Unfortunate as that is, we also look for solutions.
