Summary

After the first round of Open Acreage Licensing Policy (the flagship program by government of India to allocate oil exploration blocks to companies), Cairn India won 41 new blocks, which include adjacent acreages to the Barmer block. The first step to start its 12K crore investment in the new area was to get environment clearance that required consent from the local community. While Cairn's operations in Barmer has resulted in a robust social and economic development, there was still resistance from the local community which hindered our attempt to obtain environment clearance.

While working among local communities with a variety of communication tools. Cairn partnered with a renowned NGO and THEATRE SOCIETY, to come up with an innovative format 'DIGITAL BHOPA BHOPI' ( Folk priests using folk music to communicate messages) to engage with the local community effectively, and reiterate the industrialization and social development Cairn brought to Barmer, to change mindsets.
