Being still part of Communist Czechoslovakia, Slovakia was mainly focused on development of heavy industry which brought along processes causing damage to environment. Since the fall of Communism in 1989 and subsequent establishment of independent Slovak republic (in 1993) there has been no systematic and managed process to remove old environmental burdens. Such activities have been carried out mainly by new companies, new foreign investors, but not the state itself.
On a long-term basis, overall environmental awareness of the population was on a low level for instance in comparison with the situation in Western Europe.
The situation finally changed in the years 2014 and 2015 when Ministry of Environment of the Slovak republic started a systematic process of removal of old environmental burdens for the first time with the help of EU structural funds. Burdens which pose threat to health and life of inhabitants of given locations were selected as a priority.
