Introduction

When Scotland achieved its own Parliament, Social Justice, became a central plank to the then First Minister, Donald Dewar's, policy framework. He highlighted a commitment towards promoting social justice and equality for all in Scotland. This was not going to be an easy task. Historically Scotland has had some of the UKs worst areas of deprivation, poverty, ill health, drug dependence and crime. These problems have been recognised and attempts have been made to tackle them, such as the largescale slum clearance operations in Glasgow...
