Many children of the baby boom years—87 percent, according to a poll by James Industries, original makers of the Slinky—recalled the old Slinky commercials that began airing in 1962. In one of the original spots, a singsong female voice intoned, "A spring, a spring, a marvelous thing." Meanwhile, the Slinky "walked" down a flight of stairs as the voice sang, "It's a wonderful toy … for a girl or a boy."

The ads, created by Barton and Cureton were not hard to remember, and they have continued to air, unchanged, throughout...
