INTRODUCTION

The term 'paradata' was first used by Mick Couper from the Institute of Social Research, University of Michigan. He began to analyze the logfiles produced by a survey software package, Surveycraft, which contained details of interviewers' keystrokes during CAPI interviews (Couper 1994, 1997). From this analysis he was able to glean some important insights into the way survey instruments were used by interviewers. This is an example of human ethology, the observation and analysis of behaviour, which has its roots in the work of the early animal psychologists such as Tinberg and Lorenz....
