INTRODUCTION
The term 'paradata' was first used by Mick Couper from the Institute of Social Research, University of Michigan. He began to analyze the logfiles produced by a survey software package, Surveycraft, which contained details of interviewers' keystrokes during CAPI interviews (Couper 1994, 1997). From this analysis he was able to glean some important insights into the way survey instruments were used by interviewers.
