Brent Council: Using research to create a dementia-friendly community in Brent

Opinion Leader and Brent Council

The challenge

In Brent there are approximately 1,900 people living with dementia who have a right to be understood, treated with respect and have their needs met. It is therefore essential that everyone, from governments, local authorities and health boards to the local corner shop and hairdresser, share part of the responsibility for ensuring that people with they feel understood, valued and able to contribute to their community. Our challenge as researchers was how do we help facilitate a dementia friendly community in Brent?

Our approach

We worked closely and collaboratively with CAD (Community Action on Dementia) Brent to implement a systems leadership approach which is an innovative way of designing services to meet the needs of people affected by health conditions from a bottom up rather than top down traditional approach to designing and commissioning of services. The diagram below shows the process for designing services and Opinion Leader was involved in stages 1 and 2 at which point CAD continued to implement some of the new models.
