JUDIE LANNON: First of all, could you explain what you mean by the 'silent takeover'?

NOREENA HERTZ: The thesis of The Silent Takeover is that governments are ceding power to multinational corporations, that people are recognising this and are turning their backs on the ballot boxes. And what we're seeing instead is an explosion of protest: demonstrations against international institutions like the IMF or the World Bank; or, very significantly, a rise in boycotts against specific companies such as Nike, Monsanto and Exxon.
