Originally a mining operations company, Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co. became a massive corporation with a diverse business in research, manufacturing, and marketing. In the 1950s the company began producing the Scotchgard line of protectors, which when applied to textiles, paper, or leather made them water, oil, and stain repellent.
