Originally a mining operations company, Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co. became a massive corporation with a diverse business in research, manufacturing, and marketing. In the 1950s the company began producing the Scotchgard line of protectors, which when applied to textiles, paper, or leather made them water, oil, and stain repellent. As with many of its products, 3M, as the company was commonly known, marketed Scotchgard to other businesses, such as carpet and furniture manufacturers. But it also sold Scotchgard to consumers.
