In 1996 I was helping make a TV series called Shop til You Drop. I was a resident expert commenting on peoples behaviour as they navigated supermarket aisles. We tried various approaches. After several attempts at a David Attenborough with gorillas approach to filming, I persuaded the producer that my job wasnt to predict behaviour or give a running commentary. It was to try to interpret behaviour. A different tack was needed.

After discussions with producer, cameraman and researchers, I suggested using a small camera to do my own filming....
