Exactly 100 years after inception, the perception of Rugby League as a northern game remained steadfast amongst the wider UK population. Whilst Rugby League may have survived in its 1995 format, it was felt amongst major influencers in the game (e.g. Maurice Lindsay, CEO Rugby Football League) that the sport needed to expand its appeal beyond its regional roots.
