Beginning in the early 1960s, Motel 6 enjoyed enormous success with its ultradiscount brand of lodging, which minimized amenities and maximized value for cost-conscious travelers. Designed by a new breed of motel managers who came not from the hospitality trade but from the construction industry, Motel 6 represented a triumph of economy in virtually every aspect of its design. Even the shower stalls had rounded edges, making them easier and faster to clean, thus keeping down maintenance costs.
