Lay's potato chips started out as the major brand of H.W. Lay & Company and, like most snack food products, was marketed in one region of the United States. In Lay's case it was the Southeast. H.W. Lay joined the Frito Company, which enjoyed similar success in the Southwest, to form Frito-Lay, Inc., and a nation wide distribution network was created.
