Software giant Microsoft raised the stakes in the US$20 billion global video game war with the European launch of Xbox  last March. By the end of May the company had shipped around half a million consoles in Europe and was predicting second quarter global sales of between 3.5 million and 4 million. Rival Nintendo had shipped 4.5 million GameCube machines worldwide while Sony's PlayStation 2 leads with more than 31 million.
