In February 2020, Freedom from Torture and Purpose were getting ready to launch the first of three campaigns together.

The first, Spare a Fiver, was a light-hearted campaign that asked the British public to empathise with the experience of getting by on just a fiver a day, as so many survivors of torture must do while seeking asylum.

Just before launch, the news began to change. Suddenly, the concept of being forced to survive on just £5 became even more unrealistic, as store shelves emptied, people stockpiled, prices skyrocketed, and...
