The phrase "The Greatest Show on Earth" was first used by P.T. Barnum. It originally referred to an enterprise involving Barnum, Dan Castello, and William C. Coup and called P.T. Barnum's Great Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan and Hippodrome. In 1872, when Coup ordered the first customized railroad train to move the show, Barnum proclaimed it "The Greatest Show on Earth."
