This paper was designed for the section of the MRS conference on “Adopting a new outlook”. In order to do so, the authors create a hypothetical agency - Fair Trade Research - as a useful way to think about whether ‘a new outlook’ based on strong socio-political convictions would open up new opportunities for the research industry and its stakeholders.
