'They couldn't hit an elephant at this dist' were the last words of General John Sedgewick, who unwisely raised his head over the parapet at the Battle of Spotsylvania during the US Civil War in 1864. By all accounts, Sedgewick was a good general, and chose to use the words as encouragement to his troops. As a result, he joined the ranks of heroic failures in history.
