The Australian publishing industry is not in decline, it's simply evolving.
Chris Janz, Managing Director of Australian Metro Publishing for Fairfax Media, told the Inform News Media Summit in Sydney that, alongside News Corp, the publisher is investing more in Australian journalism than any other organisation.
"We invest hundreds of millions of dollars in journalism across very big newsrooms every year. Yes, those newsrooms are not the size and scale that they were when they were producing newspapers that were 300 pages thick," he said.
Speaking on a panel alongside Nicole Sheffield, Chief Digital Officer for News Corp Australia, Janz attested publishers need to take responsibility for the narrative and switch the conversation from decline to one about "innovating and investing in growth".
Sheffield agreed: "We're in complex businesses. That complexity causes different types of conversations. We can't help but think of the good old days and talk to that."
