The future of luxury hospitality, as Rosewood Hotel Group sees it

It may be one of the world’s fastest growing hotel companies with 50 or so hotels in the works, but as Sonia Cheng, CEO of Hong Kong-based Rosewood Hotel Group, would have you know, this rapid expansion is also a considered one.

“If you look at the pipeline, it seems daunting. But, our pipeline is growing and pacing well for the next five years. We are selectively choosing our cities, to thoughtfully curate the hotels,” she said at the Skift Forum Asia travel conference in Singapore.

Rosewood Hotel Group, a subsidiary of Chow Tai Fook Enterprises whose portfolio includes other hotel brands including New World Hotels & Resorts, Pentahotels, and the up-and-coming Khos, was formerly known as New World Hospitality until its name change in 2013. It is also a family business (Cheng is the third-generation scion).

In 2011, the hotel management company acquired the Dallas-based Rosewood Hotels & Resorts, an ultra-luxury brand for a tidy sum of US$229.5m and hasn’t looked back since. By the end of 2019, the group is set to have nine Rosewood properties in Asia – “a very important market for us”.
