The streaming wars are well under way. Incumbent SVOD players Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime have been joined in the fray by the likes of WarnerMedia’s HBO Max, NBCUniversal’s Peacock and UK broadcaster coalition BritBox – not to mention (increasingly troubled) mobile video start-up Quibi. Disney+ gained millions of subscribers after launching near the start of the pandemic.
Nielsen data shows American adults streamed almost 142 billion hours of content during the week of May 11 – up 43% from a year ago – and much of that was on subscription services.
