Ganesh Chaturthi, a 9 day Ganesh festival, is celebrated with lots of enthusiasm across Maharashtra. But the festival also has its dark side. Every year during Ganesh Chaturthi, on the day of bidding goodbye to the lord, over 1.3 million Ganesh idols are immersed in local lakes and ponds. 97% of these idols are made up of Plaster of Paris (POP) & lead paints and are non-bio-degradable leading to 300% rise in water pollution levels.
