At one time, Ray Wood observed in The Print Casebooks, television news reporters were "little more than electronic robots reading news in an impersonal way, showing neither sadness nor elation." Writing in 1975, Wood described the not-too-distant past, when, according to one story, CBS executive Fred Friendly gave a group of newspeople a stern dressing-down because he had caught them laughing and joking together off the air "at a time when so much was on the line vs. NBC's presidential election coverage."
