This is an introductory piece to four articles on consumer change. The author questions whether change is as fast as commentators pronounce and suggests that, in evolutionary terms, we have not.

Change is increasingly rapid and extensive. We are constantly faced with new concepts, new technology, new approaches. Our grandparents or at least our great grandparents would not recognise today's world.

All this is true though from time to time the suspicion arises that it is in the interest of commentators to exaggerate it.

But do we change as fast? It seems unlikely. Certainly, we adapt; we adopt new ideas, new modes of behaviour, new fashions. Yes, we change. But how fundamental are these changes?

In evolutionary terms, almost the last significant change to human animals...
