Objectives

Plastic is the plague of our times and everyone associated with its production has a responsibility to change our toxic relationship with it. Malaysia is the world's 8th largest producer of mismanaged plastic wastes. One of the major contributors to the country's overall plastic waste is the single use plastic bag1.

The average Malaysian uses at least 300 plastic bags per year - totaling up to 9 billion bags per year2. The vast majority of these are single use, and this figure is solely based on bags from hypermarkets and supermarkets, it does not include those taken from other avenues3. The public are becoming aware of the plastic problem, but over decades of shopping have become addicted to the simple convenience of picking up a new bag at the counter every time4.
