At the beginning of the COVID pandemic, CDC research showed Black Americans were 3x as likely as white Americans to contract the disease, 5x as likely to end up in the hospital, and twice as likely to die from it.
Yet, as the promise of vaccines started to become a reality in the fall, Black Americans were one of the groups least likely to get the vaccine. Many cited distrust of the medical establishment and stories of getting substandard care as reasons for vaccine hesitancy.
