In the mid-1980s, people in the United States caught what was called "Down Under fever," thanks in part to a series of four commercials in which Paul Hogan promoted the Australian Tourist Commission (ATC). Hogan, a former bridge painter turned actor and pitchman, looked the part of the classic Australian, at least in Americans' romanticized view.
