In 1990 AT&T Corporation began to feel the sting of competition. The telecommunications giant had once been the largest corporation in the world; with $155 billion in assets, it was bigger than General Motors, Mobil, and Exxon combined. In 1984, however, the corporation was forced to divest itself of 22 local Bell operating companies. AT&T was left with $34 billion in assets, and upstarts such as MCI Communications Corporation and Sprint posed more of a threat to the former monopoly's control of U.S. telephone service.
