The British Heart Foundation (BHF) know first-hand how much death and disease is born of that simple fact. They know that terrifying, far-ranging diseases like stroke, vascular dementia and diabetes are all connected to the heart and circulatory system, and to each other.

But unless you ask people to think about those connections, the hearts feels isolated; an organ existing in limbo. Because of that, the BHF's remit feels isolated too. Perceived to be limited to lifestyle diseases, developed by older, overweight men, smoking their way into ill health. But the truth is that, as it stands, heart and circulatory diseases will kill one in four of us. The BHF are committed to Beating Heartbreak Forever and funding £100 million of research each year to do just that.
