If I were starting a new business tomorrow, it wouldn't be an ad agency. I've started some before. Some were even arguably successful (thanks largely to the talent and determination of my partners).
It's not that I don't like advertising anymore — quite the contrary. Advertising, like innovation and R&D, is one of the most important engines of top-line revenue growth in all of business. Despite the currently fashionable pronouncements of the decrepitude of the ad industry, I know it has a dynamic future.
