In 1958, Arthur Radebaugh - a graphic artist by trade - began his futuristic series ‘Closer than we think’, which delivered an illustrated future filled with flying cars and tech-enabled objects to a generation of Americans. Today, a version of his vision is on its way to becoming a reality.
There are various definitions of a smart city, the British Standards Institute for example, defines the term as “the effective integration of physical, digital and human systems in the built environment to deliver sustainable, prosperous and inclusive future for its citizens”. While Cisco defines smart cities as those who adopt “scalable solutions that take advantage of information and communications technology (ICT) to increase efficiencies, reduce costs, and enhance quality of life”.
