Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, called for a wide-ranging federal privacy law to protect individuals and society alike from the ‘data-industrial complex’ at a recent conference in Brussels titled “Debating Ethics: Dignity and Respect in Data Driven Life”.

It was just the latest clarion call to highlight this most vital of issues.

Contrasting Apple’s attitudes towards, and actions around, privacy versus the other giants of Silicon Valley; he warned that our personal data is being weaponised, with the results used against us with military efficiency. A key effect of that weapon system is to undermine our shared sense of what is true or false.
